Gravestones¶
Inscriptions on Gravestones should not be funny. That’s simple wrong, but sometimes they are and usually, that happens by accident or chance.
„Die Mutter war’s. Was braucht’s der Worte mehr.“
Literally, this means „A Mother she was, no more words are needed“ and it expresses love and admiration for a person who was a loving Mother and that single word Mother shall be enough to describe her.
However, since the second part of the sentence is missing (for reasons unknown) the phrase could also have a completely different meaning. Literally translated, „Die Mutter war’s“ simply means „The mother did it“ and could mean, that poor Julie was murdered by her Mother. Which is very likely not the case here and poor speculation based on an (maybe deliberately) incomplete grave inscription, assuming that the fellow reader is educated enough to know the full phrase and its meaning.
Funny? Not really. Interesting? Certainly.
